On the first day of the 59th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 59) in New York, APC organised a high-level panel, “Reprioritising Section J of the Beijing Platform for Action: Critical issues on the human rights of women and girls and the internet”, in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of Estonia to the UN and with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and the National Women’s Institute of Costa Rica (INAMU).
The session revisited section J of the Beijing Platform for Action and highlighted the crucial role that media and (ICTs) play in promoting and sometimes hindering women’s rights. This was one of the first reviews where the importance of addressing online gender-based violence against women was emphasized as well as ensuring women’s participation in ICT-related decision-making.
