The First Africa Symposium on Technology-facilitated Gender-based Violence (TFGBV) will bring together stakeholders from across the continent to share knowledge, explore regional best practices and strengthen collaboration to prevent and respond to TFGBV, under the theme "TFGBV in sub-Saharan Africa: From Context to Collective Action."

Hosted by UNFPA Kenya and UNFPA Benin in collaboration with the Governments of Benin, Canada and Kenya, the Association for Progressive Communications, and Rifonga, the Symposium will spotlight African-led solutions and centre the unique yet diverse contexts shaping TFGBV across the continent.

Africa’s socio-cultural, legal, linguistic and technological diversity demands tailored approaches to addressing TFGBV. The Symposium will provide a vital space to examine regional nuances, share regional best practices in TFGBV prevention and response programming and law and policy, and address challenges. By bringing together African governments, civil society organizations, tech companies, academics and activists, the Symposium will provide a crucial platform for fostering stronger networks, partnerships, south-south learning and cooperation, and drive collective action to create safer digital and physical spaces for women and girls.

Objectives

  • Provide a dynamic platform for sharing knowledge, research and data specific to the prevalence, forms and impact of TFGBV in various African contexts.
  • Strengthen collaboration across existing networks in Africa working on GBV and technology.
  • Showcase and exchange best/promising practices, innovative tools and survivor-centred approaches in responding to TFGBV, adapted for or originating from Africa.
  • Critically identify and analyze persisting challenges, gaps in current interventions and emerging trends in TFGBV relevant to the African context.
  • Foster robust collaboration, partnerships and networking opportunities across African governments, UN agencies, civil society organizations, tech industry representatives, academia and activists working across GBV and digital rights fields.
