APC is looking for a part-time system administrator to join APC’s technical team and our virtual office to support infrastructure maintenance and administration, working closely together with our lead sysadmin and other members of the technical team.

APC is a global network of civil society organisations whose mission is to strengthen collective organising towards building a transformative movement to ensure that the internet and digital technologies enable social, gender and environmental justice for all people.

Main purpose of the position: As part of the technical team, you will work alongside our lead sysadmin to help maintain the technical infrastructure that we manage remotely. You will be supporting the update, creation, monitoring, optimisation and decommission of servers and systems, while documenting steps taken and processes. You will also participate in technical team activities, such as writing and updating policies and procedures, troubleshooting complex issues, as well as supporting our distributed staff in their technical needs.

About you: You believe in APC values and with your work you want to contribute to making the world a bit fairer. You would be thrilled to put feminist internet values into practice. You feel ~ in the command line, and Unix systems are your playground. For you, security and reliability are not just hashtags, but the way you walk. You enjoy investigating, troubleshooting and documenting issues, as you believe that no problem should be solved twice and that information sharing across the team is the basis for efficient cooperation. You are curious and proactive but do not run away from repetitive, mundane tasks. You think that the solar system and our galaxy should run on FLOSS. You feel enthusiastic about working remotely with people located in different parts of the world, across different time zones, with different cultural backgrounds, genders and ages.

Essential skills and experience

To apply for this position, you must have:

  • At least five years of GNU/Linux system administration experience, and at least 10 in the digital technology field, in any role such as tech support, web development, DevOps, user experience, etc.

  • Expertise in LDAP implementation.
  • Networking concepts on a practical level.
  • Very good knowledge of infrastructure security best practices and a proactive approach to securitising platforms.
  • Experience working collaboratively and remotely.
  • Very good English language skills, both spoken and written. Ability to communicate with non-native English speakers from around the world.

Additionally, the ideal applicant also has:

  • Familiarity with the following technologies: KVM virtualisation, libvirt, HAProxy, nginx, Drupal, Mattermost, Nextcloud, GitLab (CI/CD), monitoring, BigBlueButton, BIND 9, Keycloak.
  • Experience remotely supporting users experiencing problems with their local devices (various OSs), having connectivity issues, etc.
  • Interest in and sound knowledge of security practices (server and client side), accessibility and user experience.
  • Experience working with non-profit global organisations working in the human rights, development and feminist fields.
  • Fluency in other language(s).
