Africa communications and research officer, Association for Progressive Communications (APC)

APC is looking for a dynamic information and communications person to join our team on the basis of a six-month fixed term contract (with optional extension should circumstances allow). The objective of the position is to provide research and communications support for APC’s internet policy, governance and rights work in Africa. The successful applicant will become part of initiatives such as the African Declaration on Internet Rights and Freedoms, the African School of Internet Governance (AfriSIG), the African Internet Governance Forum, as well as our African women’s rights activities.

Tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Desktop research to find articles, stories, resources or other content that is relevant to human rights and women’s rights on the internet in Africa.
  • Assisting in creating relevant content on internet rights and internet policy by writing blog posts, stories and reports.
  • Updating the African Declaration on Internet Rights and Freedoms platform and related social media platforms with current and relevant content, including photos and videos.
  • Networking with APC’s partners and members in Africa to gather and disseminate stories and resources about human rights on the internet in Africa.
  • Conducting interviews on social media with people involved in rights work in Africa.
  • Tracking and monitoring web metrics and the performance of social media activity to assist with optimising our communications strategies.
  • Undertaking broader communications and outreach activities related to APC’s policy, rights and gender justice work in Africa.
  • Building APC’s public profile, with emphasis on the African region, by ensuring that all French-language communication vehicles are high-quality, vibrant, current, consistent and informative.

Candidate profile:

  • Located in Africa – preferably but not necessarily in South Africa.
  • Native French speaker with excellent English language skills.
  • Interest in and understanding of internet policies, as well as human and internet rights in the region.
  • Applicants need to have completed a relevant academic qualification (ideally post-graduate) and have at least three years of experience in a related field.
  • Vibrant, creative and strategic communicator.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Expertise in social media outreach and networking.
  • Proven record of delivering on tight deadlines.
  • A team player, who enjoys working with a culturally diverse group of people located in different parts of the world.
  • Graphic design and/or multimedia skills will be an advantage.
