Since 10 am on Thursday 1 August 2013, connectivity problems at the data centre where APC servers are hosted through our member, GreenNet, affected most of our websites, email and mailing lists. This appears to be caused by a massive distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, and a loss of routing to GreenNet’s network.

Apologies for the inconvenience.

6 August: Email service and broadband should be functioning normally or near normally, and we are bringing back most websites, but there will be periods of disruption. We are continuing to investigate the origins of the DDoS attack.

8 August: The GreenNet Collective released a statement to its community explaining the circumstances of the outage and assuring that investigation into the exact causes is ongoing, “we continue to investigate the attack in order try to determine which specific site the attack intended to knock offline, as well as taking advice on possible legal recourse. We are still very busy, but technically services have returned to normal. We are also reviewing our contingency plans to protect civil society activists from digital threats, and have increased redundancy in our systems and researched other suppliers.” Read the full statement at: http://www.gn.apc.org/support/service-update-7-august.
