The final hearing in the trial of Azza Soliman will take place on 24 October 2015. Azza is facing charges in Egypt of breaching draconian Law No 107: Public Protest Law.
These politically motivated charges are linked to Azza’s witness of the murder of Shaima El- Shabbagh on 24 January 2015 at the hands of the Egyptian security forces and are judicial harassement in response to her human rights defense work with the Center for Egyptian Women’s Legal Assistance (CEWLA)..
Azza is not the only women human rights defender in Egypt harrassed for her peaceful advocacy. Dozens of defenders are continuously and systematically targeted for speaking out against injustice, documenting violations and calling for reform.
We call on AWID members, partners and allies to send a solidarity message via Twitter to @AzzaSoliman1 using the hashtag: #AzzaIsaWitness and be part of a global solidarity effort with Azza and all women human rights defenders in Egypt.
- Express solidarity with Azza and other women human rights defenders who are judicially harassed and imprisoned for their human rights advocacy
- Condemn the Egyptian government for systematically threatening women human rights defenders
