Exile Hub is dedicated to empowering human rights defenders (HRDs), journalists and activists from Myanmar and Southeast Asia, with a focus on leveraging information and communication technologies (ICTs) to protect and promote freedom of expression. The organisation provides a lifeline for those facing persecution, displacement and conflict, equipping them with the tools, skills and networks needed to amplify their voices and continue their critical work.
Exile Hub has reached over 2,100 HRDs since 2021 through a combination of safe housing, professional development workshops, and ICT-driven advocacy initiatives. It is committed to fostering freedom of expression, building digital and physical networks of support, and enabling individuals to tell their stories safely and effectively in the face of oppression. Its work stands at the intersection of technology, human rights and resilience.
APCNews spoke with the Exile Hub team to learn more about the organisation’s priorities and its decision to join the APC member network.
Why did you decide to join the APC network?
We joined APC to strengthen our commitment to advancing digital rights, freedom of expression and access to ICTs for marginalised communities, particularly human rights defenders, journalists and activists from Myanmar and Southeast Asia.
Being part of APC connects us to a global network of organisations and individuals who share our vision of using technology as a force for social justice, inclusion and democracy. This partnership allows us to exchange knowledge, collaborate on impactful initiatives, and amplify the voices of those resisting authoritarianism and fighting for their rights.
Through APC, we aim to enhance our work in ICT-based capacity building and advocacy. We also look forward to leveraging APC’s resources and expertise to improve digital security, promote equitable access to information, and ensure ICTs remain tools for empowerment, especially for those in conflict zones. Joining APC is a natural step for us as we continue to support and uplift those working tirelessly for justice and freedom.
What do you think you can contribute as a member, and what do you expect from APC?
As a member, we bring our expertise in supporting human rights defenders, journalists and activists in challenging environments, particularly those from Myanmar and Southeast Asia. Our experience in leveraging ICTs for advocacy, storytelling and e-democracy positions us to contribute valuable insights and practical knowledge to the network. We can also share our work on digital security, trauma-informed communication, and creating safe digital and physical spaces for marginalised communities. Our research and field experience in conflict and exile settings offer a unique perspective that can enrich APC’s collective knowledge and strengthen its global advocacy efforts.
In terms of what we expect from APC, we look forward to accessing a diverse community of like-minded organisations and individuals who are advancing digital rights and freedom of expression. We hope to collaborate on initiatives that enhance digital inclusion, security and advocacy for marginalised groups.
We also anticipate benefiting from APC’s resources, such as training, toolkits and research, to further our capacity to address the complex challenges faced by HRDs and activists in conflict zones. Additionally, we hope to engage in policy dialogues and campaigns that influence global and regional ICT policies, ensuring that the voices of the most vulnerable are represented and protected in the digital space. Ultimately, we view this partnership as an opportunity to share, learn and collectively advance the use of ICTs for social justice and democratic empowerment.
